Pregnancy, Childbirth, and the Newborn: The Complete Guide

Very practical, a good introduction to all that is pregnancy/childbirth. I didn't love the pregnancy part of this book, but the chapters on labor and delivery are SO informative and helpful - have so many tips on labor.

Classes

Hypnobirthing – the Marie Mongan Method

Focused on relaxation and positive birth.

Definitely geared towards people who want a non-medicated birth, but would also be helpful for anyone to help reduce fear and anxiety surrounding birth. It makes birth seem so normal and something that every woman can do. Harry also enjoyed it – it gave him lots of tools to help me in labor, opened up a lot of discussion about what I think i might want or need and gave him the tools to help.

Whatever birth class you chose (and you should definitely take one), I would recommend looking into one that is not based out of the hospital you are giving birth at – I have heard from many people those classes are more geared towards teaching you how to be a “good patient” rather than how to give birth. You can always just take a tour of the hospital L+D floor.

Chiropractor

The Webster technique is something a chiropractor can use to help align your pelvis to allow baby to settle into proper position. Would recommend definitely for third trimester, especially if you sit all day at work, but can be used anytime in pregnancy especially if you have lower back, pelvic or hip pain. Most insurances will cover chiropractic costs.

Expectful App

Has pregnancy related mediations. Has one for each week as well as others for unexpected circumstances, etc. Has been very helpful and relaxing

Doula

A doula is a woman who is trained to support you during pregnancy and birth. They offer a wide variety of services including explaining medical situations, help w medical decision making, assisting w birth plan and of course continuous labor support.

They are completely focused on you and the baby, and women who use doulas have about 50% reduction in birth interventions including c sections, augmentation of labor, and assisted delivery (forceps, vacuum etc). We chose a doula since I wanted an unmedicated birth, but I can definitely see how it would be helpful even if you know you want an epidural. www.DONA.org can help you find a certified doula in your area.
